A bookcase like a multicoloured totem, its arms angled in every direction. A table whose legs are each a different shape and colour. Surfaces covered in squiggles, zigzags and dots that look lifted from a comic. In the early 1980s, a group of designers gathered in Milan around Ettore Sottsass presented a collection of furniture and objects that broke with almost everything modern design had stood for over decades. They called themselves Memphis, and their irreverence, colour and humour still divide opinion. Their aesthetic has made a strong comeback, but it is worth placing it correctly in time and understanding what it actually proposed.<\/p>\n

Against modernist restraint<\/h2>\n

For much of the twentieth century, modern design had championed function, simplicity and restraint: clean lines, honest materials, form following function. By the late 1970s, many designers felt that language had become rigid, predictable and a little dull.<\/p>\n

\"The<\/figure>\n

Ettore Sottsass, an Italian designer with a long career behind him, became the centre of a group of young designers who wanted something else: design that was emotional, playful, full of colour and references to popular culture. They founded the group in 1980, and their first collection was shown in Milan soon after, to great impact. One of their most famous pieces, the Carlton bookcase, designed by Sottsass himself and dated 1981, sums up much of their spirit: a brightly coloured structure with angled arms that looks more sculpture than furniture.<\/p>\n

It is often said the group took its name from a Bob Dylan song playing during one of their early meetings, enjoying the double reference to Memphis in the United States and the ancient Egyptian capital.<\/p>\n

The features of Memphis style<\/h2>\n

Memphis’s language is unmistakable, and a few traits define it.<\/p>\n

Unapologetic colour.<\/strong> Intense pinks, yellows, greens, blues and reds, often combined in unexpected ways. Against modernist neutrals, Memphis embraced saturation.<\/p>\n

Basic, playful geometry.<\/strong> Circles, triangles, cylinders, zigzags and semicircles, combined like a child’s building set.<\/p>\n

Graphic pattern.<\/strong> Surfaces covered in wavy lines, dots, blobs and squiggles, often on plastic laminates, a material then thought lowly.<\/p>\n

Asymmetry and apparent imbalance.<\/strong> Pieces that seem about to topple, with elements sticking out in different directions.<\/p>\n

Humour and irony.<\/strong> Memphis did not take itself too seriously, and that lightness was itself a provocation against the solemnity of modern design.<\/p>\n

A moment, not a long era<\/h2>\n

The Memphis Group had a short life as a collective, just a few years in the 1980s. But its impact was enormous. Its aesthetic spread into fashion, graphic design, advertising and television of the period, becoming one of the defining images of Postmodernism in design.<\/p>\n

It should not be confused with other periods. Memphis is not mid-century design, although both use geometric forms; mid-century came earlier, with more restraint and a different palette, as we explain in mid-century modern art: shapes, colours and influence<\/a>. Nor is it quite the aesthetic of the 1990s, even though many associate some of its patterns with that decade, because they became popular in mass culture afterwards.<\/p>\n

The comeback<\/h2>\n

In recent years, the Memphis language has returned strongly to interiors, graphic design and fashion. Its colours, geometric forms and patterns reappear on cushions, rugs, lamps, prints and building fa\u00e7ades. Some original pieces have become highly sought-after collectors’ items.<\/p>\n

\"Neutral<\/figure>\n

The revival is usually gentler than the original: somewhat more muted palettes, more measured combinations, single pieces rather than whole interiors. It is a way of capturing its joy without the stridency of the time.<\/p>\n

Memphis at home, in moderation<\/h2>\n

Bringing some Memphis into your home can be fun, provided it is done with restraint. A full Memphis interior is intense and very themed. It works better to introduce one or two elements, such as a lamp, a side table or a print of playful geometry in bright colours, into a more neutral setting, where they can stand out without overwhelming.<\/p>\n

In art, prints of playful geometric forms, circles, semicircles and stripes in cheerful colours on pale grounds, capture that spirit in a very current way. For a calmer version, postmodern-inspired geometry can also be translated into warm, muted palettes.<\/p>\n

Bend\u00edra’s prints<\/a> are not Memphis, but some, such as the studies of circles and squares in clay, charcoal and sand, share its love of simple geometric form, in a much quieter key.<\/p>\n
