She used scraps of coloured fabric, arranged in a mosaic of rectangles and triangles, depicting nothing in particular. It was a domestic, almost private gesture. Yet many art historians now regard that quilt, held by the Musée National d’Art Moderne at the Centre Pompidou, as her first abstract composition. The painter was Sonia Delaunay, and that everyday object sums up what she would do for the rest of her life: erase the line between art and the things we use every day, with colour as her only language.

From Ukraine to Paris

Sonia Delaunay was born in 1885 in the Russian Empire, in what is now Ukraine, and grew up in St Petersburg with an uncle who adopted her and gave her a cosmopolitan upbringing of museums, travel and languages. She studied drawing in Germany and reached Paris in the mid-1900s, drawn, like so many artists, by the city’s energy. There she met the painter Robert Delaunay, whom she married in 1910. Their son Charles was born in January 1911. Much of what followed, they did together.

Simultaneous contrast

To understand her work you need a nineteenth-century idea. The French chemist Michel-Eugène Chevreul, working with the dyes at the Gobelins tapestry manufactory, noticed that a colour changes depending on what sits next to it. The same grey looks warmer beside blue and cooler beside orange; two complementary colours, side by side, intensify each other. He called it simultaneous contrast.

The Delaunays took that theory and turned it into an artistic programme they called «simultanism». The idea was that colour on its own, without representing anything, could create movement, rhythm, depth and feeling. The discs and circles that run through so much of their work are exactly that: colours vibrating against one another, which the eye reads almost as if they were spinning. We explain the basics in how to use the colour wheel to choose art.

The Bal Bullier and the simultaneous dress

One of the liveliest images of the period is the Bal Bullier, a popular Paris dance hall where artists in her circle gathered. Between 1912 and 1913 Sonia Delaunay painted a series of canvases of the dance, with figures dissolving into bands and curves of colour, as if the movement itself had turned into paint.

For those evenings, according to Tate, she also designed her «simultaneous dress»: a garment pieced from contrasting coloured fabrics. It was a painting you could wear, and a statement that simultaneous colour didn’t need to stay on canvas.

A two-metre poem

In 1913 she worked with the poet Blaise Cendrars on La Prose du Transsibérien et de la Petite Jehanne de France, a long poem printed as a vertical scroll nearly two metres tall, for which she designed the cover and the pochoir (hand-stencilled) colour. Text and colour flow side by side, top to bottom, read together. It remains one of the most celebrated artists’ books of the twentieth century.

From canvas to cloth

During the First World War the Delaunays lived in Spain and Portugal. After the Russian Revolution of 1917, Sonia lost the income that had come from her family, and expanded her design work: she opened Casa Sonia in Madrid, devoted to interiors and fashion, and later, back in Paris, her Atelier Simultané. She designed printed fabrics, dresses, coats, bags, stage sets and interiors. Her textiles, with their bands, lozenges and circles of colour, sold widely and carried the language of the avant-garde onto the street.

For her there was no hierarchy: a fabric could be as serious as a painting. It sounds natural to us now; at the time it was radical.

Recognition

Sonia Delaunay kept painting and designing until her death in 1979. In 1964, according to the Centre Pompidou, the Louvre gave her a retrospective in her lifetime, the first for a woman artist, made possible by a gift of 117 works by her and Robert. In 2015 Tate Modern staged a major exhibition spanning her whole career, from painting to fashion.

Why she still inspires

Sonia Delaunay’s work feels remarkably current. Partly because of its colour, joyful and rhythmic, equally at home on a wall or a scarf. But mostly because of her attitude: the conviction that art can live in everyday things, that a quilt, a dress or a book can matter as much as a painting. In today’s homes, where art lives alongside textiles, ceramics and objects, her lesson still holds: colours talk to each other, and that conversation is everything. We look at the wider avant-garde context in twentieth-century avant-gardes and art at home.

Sonia Delaunay’s work is still in copyright; to see it, the collections of the Centre Pompidou and Tate are good places to start.

Keep reading: Bauhaus: Its History and Influence on Modern Design, How to Match Wall Art with Your Colour Palette and How to Pair Wall Art with Patterned Textiles.

De una colcha para su hijo a los tejidos, los libros y la pintura: Sonia Delaunay hizo del color un lenguaje.
