The most repeated decorating rule says that above long, low furniture, such as a sideboard, a bench or a media unit, you should hang a landscape work that follows its line. It is a good starting point, but not the only option. Sometimes the work you love most is portrait, or the wall wants a little height, or you are after the contrast between low and tall. A portrait print above low furniture can look lost, like a stamp on an oversized postcard, or it can become the most interesting thing in the room. The difference lies in how you balance the contrast between the two orientations.<\/p>\n

Contrasting orientations<\/h2>\n

Long, low furniture has a strong horizontal pull: it carries the eye from side to side. A portrait print introduces the opposite direction, drawing the eye from bottom to top. That crossing of directions can be very dynamic, but left unresolved it creates imbalance: the print looks too narrow for the furniture, or the furniture too long for the print.<\/p>\n

Offset the print<\/h2>\n

One of the most elegant solutions is not to centre the portrait print, but to move it towards one end of the furniture and balance the other side with something of similar height: a tall lamp, a vase of branches, a stack of books topped with an object. On a long piece of furniture, two matching portrait prints, side by side or a little apart, take up more width and follow its line better. Together they form an almost horizontal block that converses with the furniture, while each keeps its verticality. It is one of the simplest, safest solutions. One large portrait, leaning<\/h2>\n

On low pieces such as benches or low sideboards, a large portrait print leaning directly on the furniture against the wall has a very natural, contemporary presence. Not hung, it relates directly to the piece beneath, and its height offsets the furniture’s length. It works especially well with 50 \u00d7 70 cm formats or larger.<\/p>\n

Proportion<\/h2>\n

As a rough guide, a single portrait print above low furniture works best when the furniture is not much more than two or three times the width of the framed print. If the piece is very long, a single narrow portrait will tend to get lost, and a pair, an offset with a counterweight, or a multi-piece arrangement will serve better.<\/p>\n

On the furniture, objects are a portrait print’s allies. A tall object on one side, a low wide one on the other, a stack of books: they help build a balanced arrangement in which the print is not alone. Do not overdo it, though; two or three well-chosen objects are enough.<\/p>\n

When it does not work<\/h2>\n

A small portrait print, alone and centred above a very long piece of furniture, almost never works: it reads as isolated, unconnected to the whole. If that is your situation, rethink it. Add a second print, introduce a counterweight, or move the work to a narrower wall where its verticality makes sense.<\/p>\n
